We are contemplating a 1 or 2 hour horseback ride in Yellowstone this august. Does anyone have a preference for the Roosevelt ride or the canyon ride. Also, would the ride to the campfire dinner be worth it or are the other rides offered by xanterra more scenic? I think the Roosevelt ride is prettier and the terrain more varied. Either way, do the 2 hour ride.

Either way, do the 2 hour ride. If you are not riding regularly you might want to take a couple of ibuprofen beforehand!
Who will be in your party? I highly recommend the campfire dinner and kids especially will love it. It seems a little kitschy but I've been three times- what can I say, it's just fun and the food is good. You can't take extra gear on the horseback ride, so if it looks like it might rain, wear a light jacket and hat that are waterproof.
Thanks for your reply. It will be myself and my 2 daughters who ride regularly. The campfire dinner sounds fun and I think my kids will like it but I was worried it would be to cliche and the ride wouldn't be as pretty. I would prefer to ride the prettiest and most diverse terrain so may so the 2 hour ride from Roosevelt. I wish there was a slightly more detailed description of the dinner ride so your help has been appreciated. I think you'll enjoy the ride, though it may seem a bit easy for seasoned riders as it is nose-to-tail.
The ride out to the cooksite does not go along the same path as the wagons, which go down the center of the valley. Riders wind up through the hills and across a creek, then descend to the cook site. They leave an hour or more before the wagons do. You will return via the valley ahead of the wagons so you'll get a chance to see it, however.
I would advise taking the later ride, the low light on the meadow in the evening is very beautiful. There's a little teeny stream at the picnic area, too, very safe even for toddlers. I'm not a big fan of anything touristy. For some reason, the cookout just doesn't give me that feeling.
There is a cowboy-poet singer but he's pretty low-key. They don't have to put on a show, the Park is the show. The following link lists private companies that are authorized to provide horseback tours inside Yellowstone Park. The would get you away from the typical nose to tail trail rides offered by Xanterra. They will also allow you to go to different areas of the park. The companies also provide trail rides outside the park which will provide, for the most part, a more scenic ride.
I know that Skyline Guest Ranch is just 3 miles east of Cooke City and they provide trail rides in that area. That would be a very scenic part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem to ride in. Hell's A Roarin also provides horseback rides out of Gardiner. There are many other companies on the list that would be great if you want to experience something different then what Xanterra provides. That's a great idea as we are staying in west Yellowstone 4 nights and outside gardiner 4 nights so would be able to do quite easily.
Have you ridden with hellsaway before? They don't have a lot of detail on their website but I like the idea of a smaller group. I've gone on horseback rides in the Tetons but never in the Yellowstone area. Very scenic but quite the drive we've driven the road quite a few times over the years just to sight see. Hell's a Roarin rides in a very scenic area. From the hills on the south side of Jardine, which is where their ranch is located, you can look down into the northern parts of Yellowstone.
