Principals at an additional 15 schools said a majority of their parents voted to continue requiring uniforms, in some cases with more relaxed terms. A few principals did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Also, principals of magnet schools are not required to poll parents about the uniform policy.

Every school has a dress code. No super short shorts, for example. And no exposed underwear. But about 35 of schools in the Guilford County system require students to wear uniforms, typically khaki pants and collared shirts.

The policies at some schools are more strict than others. The required colors vary by school and sometimes vary by grade level. Before school last fall, Currie said she checked multiple stores for the right khakis and collared shirts.

Still, her sons have been disciplined at school for wearing clothes that did not comply with SMOD, such as the wrong color shirt or the wrong type of pants, Currie said. Currie said she spent months shopping for appropriate jackets with no hoods before finally finding some. The cost is her main concern, she said.

Other parents made similar complaints when pushing back against SMOD in recent years. They questioned schools using SMOD-free days as fundraisers. They also described students getting sent home for violations such as having the wrong color shoelaces. That effort gained momentum last year, ending this January with the Guilford County Board of Education amending its policy.

Now, principals at schools requiring uniforms have to poll parents every two years to gauge support for the policy. The principals had until this month to survey parents on whether to continue with SMOD. Principals said they used school events, automated phone calls and surveys sent home to get feedback from parents. Some said they made multiple attempts to get a significant number of responses. Wiley Elementary will modify its uniform policy, Principal Tavy Fields said.

Some parents wanted particular colors included. Principal Kimberly Robertson said she met with some parents in January, held meetings at the school and sent surveys home. Cost factored into whether parents were for or against SMOD. Others said uniforms are more economical. Log In. Keep it Clean.
