Shrink document latex-LaTeX - Squeezing papers

For conferences in computer science it is very common that papers are restricted to a certain number of pages my experience here stems from the computer vision and machine learning communities. Typically, these conferences provide LaTeX style files that you are bound to be using and some of them waste a lot of space that could be used to explain your ideas more clearly. On this page, I give away some tricks that I frequently used to make my papers fit into the required number of pages in a variety of conferences. Note that in conferences where you are supposed to provide your LaTeX source code these tricks can typically be applied during the submission stage but not when preparing the camera ready papers. If certain tricks can be applied, it is noted.

  • LaTeX's margins are, by default, 1.
  • Using a different font size on a global level will affect all normal-sized text as well as the size of headings, footnotes, etc.

Any print publication will naturally have a page limit for articles it publishes. It is common for print journals to use a smaller font for references than normal text. You can do this yourself by enclosing the bibliography portion of your document with a LaTeX font size environment like this:. LaTeX uses certain default values set by the style-sheet to determine, for example, the spacing between items in a list, before and after equations, before and after figures, etc.

They usually involve adding a negative amount of space to an existing environment variable. For example:. The above code reduces the separation between items in a list by 0.

The right amount to add can only be found by trial and error. Note that sometimes, adding a more negative amount does not seem to reduce spacing, and when pushed beyond a point, the typesetting gets totally messed up. Use this technique in moderation. This is a more direct method to cut down spacing exactly where you need it.

It is best illustrated with an example:. This is the end of a paragraph. If you are submitting a paper for a double blind-reviewed conference, you will not be revealing the author names and affiliations. The only way around is to edit the style file itself. In any document, it is common to have paragraphs where the last character is at the beginning of a column.

Often, it is possible to shorten that paragraph just enough to make the paragraph end in the previous line instead, thus saving one entire line. Browse you entire document looking for such paragraphs, and fix as many as you can. Sometimes, we have tables that span more than one column, but does not really need two columns. For example, the following table may not fit into a single column. This obvious trick is, IMO, the main cause of illegible conference papers, but sometimes, there is no other choice.

The page dimensions in a L a T e X document are highly configurable and the geometry package offers a simple way to change the length and layout of different elements such as the paper size, margins, footnote, header, orientation, etc. Suppose you have to create a document in a4paper and the text shouldn't exceed 6 in width and 8 in height. To create it with geometry is easy, include this one line in the preamble:.

The parameters passed to the command determine the layout. In this case a4paper establishes the paper size and the total parameter determines the size of the text area.

Open an example of the geometry package in ShareLaTeX. Paper size, orientation and margins are the most common page elements that must be changed depending on the type of document. For example, let's create a document with legal paper size, landscape orientation and a 2 in margin:. As you see, the parameters are comma separated. For a complete list of predefined paper sizes, see the reference guide. The second parameter is the orientation, its default value is portrait. Finally, each margin is set to 2 in.

The regular L a T e X page dimensions are presented with example values in picture at the right of this section. The geometry package provides a flexible and easy interface to change page dimensions. You can change the page layout with intuitive parameters:. Next is a list of document elements whose length can be changed. Here the text area, the left margin and the top margin are set. The right and bottom margins are automatically computed to fit the page.
